Erice sits 750 metres above Trapani on a near-vertical mountainside, and the approach is part of the experience. The cable car (funivia) from Trapani is the most practical and enjoyable option: it runs regularly and takes about 10 minutes, with extraordinary views over the salt flats and the coast as you ascend. Check opening hours in advance — the funivia closes for maintenance at various points during the year.
By road, the SS187 climbs the mountain in a series of tight switchbacks. Driving up is manageable in a small car; parking inside the village is limited, and the main gate entrance is narrow. Many visitors park at the cable car station in Trapani and ascend that way.
Trapani itself is accessible by bus from Palermo (2 hours), by ferry from the Egadi Islands, and by domestic flight via Trapani–Birgi Airport.
