The whitewashed parish church of San Vincenzo stands at the highest point of the main village, on a small terrace overlooking the harbour. The current building dates from the 17th century, rebuilt several times after damage from earthquakes and eruptions. The interior is modest — a single nave, simple wooden pews, a statue of Saint Vincent — but the steps in front are the social heart of Stromboli on summer evenings.
The square is also where the road ends and the trail up the volcano begins. Sit on the church steps with a granita in the early evening before walking down to the harbour or up to the Osservatorio.
