Strombolicchio

A kilometre or so northeast of Stromboli village, the basalt sea stack of Strombolicchio rises out of the water with a small lighthouse balanced on top. It is one of the oldest exposed pieces of the entire Aeolian volcanic complex, the eroded core of a former crater. Sea birds nest on the lower ledges; the water around the base is deep and clear.

Most boat trips circling Stromboli swing past Strombolicchio on the way. Swimming and snorkelling near the rock are excellent if the sea is calm. Climbing the steps to the lighthouse is officially closed but occasionally allowed by tour operators with permits.

A story
Strombolicchio — 'little Stromboli' — is the eroded plug of an older volcano that pre-dates the present cone by roughly 200,000 years. The little white lighthouse on top was built in 1925 and converted to solar power in 1980; today it is uninhabited, reached only by 200 steep concrete steps cut into the rock.
