Ginostra

On the opposite side of the volcano from the main village, Ginostra is a hamlet of perhaps 30 winter residents reached only by sea. The houses tumble down the slope in pale terraces; donkeys still carry heavy goods between the harbour and the upper lanes. The view of the Sciara del Fuoco from Ginostra at night is the best on the island.

A few hydrofoils stop here daily on the Lipari–Stromboli line. Day-trippers should check the return schedule carefully; missing the last boat means a long, expensive private transfer back to the main village. There is one bar with rooms and a couple of seasonal restaurants.

A story
Ginostra had no electricity until 2004 and was officially the smallest port in the world — until quite recently, only one boat at a time could dock at its tiny pier. Even today the village has just one bar, a single grocer, and a permanent population that drops into single digits in winter.
