Castelmola

Castelmola is a tiny village perched at 550 m on the rocky crag above Taormina, with the ruins of a medieval castle at its summit and views that surpass even Taormina's famous panoramas. On clear days you can see both the Aeolian Islands to the north and the Calabrian coast across the strait — the full sweep of the Sicilian seascape.

The village is accessible on foot from Taormina (a steep 45-minute climb) or by taxi. It is authentically small and non-touristy compared to the town below, with a handful of bars and restaurants serving the almond-based products the area is famous for. The walk down through the ancient terraced vineyards and orchards is particularly pleasant. Go in the late afternoon for the best light on Etna.

A story
The almond wine of Castelmola — a sweet, thick liqueur made from local almonds — was invented in the early 20th century at the Bar San Giorgio in the village square. It is almost impossible to visit Castelmola without being offered a sample. The bar has been run by the same family for generations and the recipe has not changed.
