Via Fillungo is the main shopping street of the medieval city — a long, narrow pedestrian lane running roughly north-south through the heart of Lucca that has been the commercial spine of the city for a thousand years. The street is lined with Art Nouveau shopfronts from the early 20th century, several of which retain their original mosaic floors, wrought-iron fittings, and carved wooden details, making it one of the best-preserved early 20th-century commercial streets in Italy.
Halfway along Via Fillungo stands the Torre delle Ore, a medieval clock tower still keeping time after several centuries. The street is at its liveliest in the evening, when Lucchesi of all ages promenade between the shops, bars, and gelaterie in the passeggiata that is still a daily social ritual in Italian towns.
