When to Go

Lucca is pleasant year-round, but spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) are the best months — warm and clear without the summer heat and crowds. July and August are hot (temperatures reaching 35°C), and the city is busiest with Italian and international tourists. Christmas in Lucca is atmospheric, with the Luminara celebrations in December including illuminated processions in honour of the Volto Santo.

The Lucca Summer Festival in July brings major international music acts to Piazza Napoleone — past performers have included Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, and Elton John. Lucca Comics and Games in late October is one of Europe's largest comics and gaming conventions, filling the city with costumed attendees for several days.
