Palazzo dei Priori

Begun in 1208 and finished by 1257, the Palazzo dei Priori is the oldest town hall in Tuscany — pre-dating the more famous Palazzo Vecchio in Florence by half a century. The crenellated facade, set with the terracotta arms of Florentine podestà who governed the city after 1472, is a textbook example of early Tuscan civic Gothic.

The Council Chamber on the upper floor — open to visitors as part of the combined museum ticket — preserves a fresco of the Crucifixion by Pierfrancesco Fiorentino and a 14th-century Annunciation by Jacopo di Cione. Climb the bell tower (when open) for the best view of the surrounding landscape.
