The central square of Volterra is one of the oldest medieval squares in Tuscany, ringed by stone palaces that have barely changed since the thirteenth century. The Palazzo dei Priori (1208) on its north side is the oldest surviving seat of municipal government in the region. The tower gives good views over the surrounding landscape on a clear day.
