Once inside the walls, Assisi is a walking town — the centre is small enough to cross end-to-end in 20 minutes, the streets are steep and largely cobblestone, and most are closed to non-resident traffic. Wear shoes that can handle a constant 5–15 % gradient.
City buses (Linea A and Linea B) loop between the train station at Santa Maria degli Angeli, the lower town, and the main piazzas — useful if you are arriving with luggage or returning from the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli. The Eremo delle Carceri and San Damiano are reachable on foot from the centre but the walks involve real elevation.
Public parking is well-signposted around the edges of the old town (Porta Nuova, Piazza Matteotti, Porta San Pietro). Cars are best left at one of these and the rest of the visit done on foot.
