The historic centre of Perugia is almost entirely pedestrianised, and the distances within it are short. Most visitors will walk everywhere in the old city. The key vertical challenge — the city sits on a ridge at around 450 metres, with the railway station and lower town 100 metres below — is solved by the Minimetrò (a single-line automated metro that runs from the station to Pincetto near Piazza IV Novembre) and by a series of escalators through the Rocca Paolina underground.
Outside the centre, public buses cover the surrounding area including the factory district (for the Perugina chocolate factory) and the university campus. The bus system is functional but not always obvious for first-time visitors; the tourist office can provide maps. Car rental is available at the station; driving within the historic centre is restricted.
