The Cinque Torri — Five Towers — are a group of distinctive dolomite pinnacles rising above the Falzarego plateau, about 12 kilometres south of Cortina. They are among the most photographed formations in the Dolomites: five separate towers of pale rock, each with a slightly different profile, arranged in a loose cluster above a high alpine meadow. A chairlift from the Falzarego road reaches the base; from there a well-marked trail loops around the towers in about an hour.
The area doubled as a battlefield in World War I, and an excellent open-air museum traces the Italian and Austro-Hungarian positions along the ridgeline. Original trenches, gun emplacements, and barracks have been restored and are freely accessible on foot. In winter the Cinque Torri area has a small ski sector with beginner and intermediate slopes.
