The main building of the University of Padua, founded in 1222 and one of the oldest universities in the world. Guided tours take you through the original courtyards, the Great Hall lined with coats of arms, and the Anatomical Theatre built in 1594 — a steep, six-tiered wooden oval where medical students watched dissections by candlelight. Galileo's lectern is here too, from his eighteen years on the faculty. Visits by guided tour only; book ahead in summer.
