Padua's position in the centre of the Veneto makes it an excellent base for exploring the region. Venice is just 25 minutes away by train — close enough for a day trip in either direction. Vicenza, Palladio's city of elegant villas, is 20 minutes west. Verona is under an hour.
South of the city, the Euganean Hills (Colli Euganei) offer a different pace: volcanic hills covered in vineyards and chestnut woods, dotted with thermal spas, medieval villages, and walking trails. The spa towns of Abano Terme and Montegrotto Terme have been drawing visitors to their hot springs since Roman times.
