Chiesa di San Nicolò

A vast Gothic Dominican church at the southwest edge of the centre, its scale far out of proportion to modern Treviso — it was funded by Pope Benedict XI, a Trevigian-born friar elected in 1303. The interior is light and serene, with painted columns showing saints by Tommaso da Modena and others.

Walk through to the adjoining Seminario Vescovile to see the chapter house frescoes of Dominican scholars by Tommaso da Modena, painted in 1352. A small fee gets you in via the seminary entrance.

A story
On the chapter house walls of the adjoining seminary, Tommaso da Modena painted forty portraits of Dominican scholars at work in 1352. One of them — the cardinal Hugues de Saint-Cher — is depicted wearing spectacles. It is the oldest known image in Western art of a person wearing glasses.
