Punta della Dogana

Tadao Ando's conversion of a 17th-century customs house into the Pinault contemporary art collection

Punta della Dogana occupies the triangular tip of the Dorsoduro peninsula where the Grand Canal and Giudecca Canal meet — the most prominent position in Venice after the Doge's Palace. The 17th-century customs warehouse was converted by architect Tadao Ando in 2009 into a contemporary art museum housing the Pinault Collection, one of the most important private art collections in the world.

The building is excellent — Ando stripped the interior back to raw brick and concrete while preserving the structure — and the art programme is consistently strong, with major installations by Koons, Cattelan, Sherman, and others. The view from the terrace, looking back toward the entrance of the Grand Canal, is one of the great panoramas of Venice. The Palazzo Grassi on the Grand Canal is the sister venue of the same collection. A combined ticket covers both.
