Antonio Pigafetta (c.1491–c.1531) was born in Vicenza and went on to achieve something extraordinary: he sailed with Magellan on the first circumnavigation of the globe and survived to write it down. His account, Relazione del primo viaggio intorno al mondo, is one of the great documents of the Age of Exploration — detailed, observant, and written with something approaching literary flair.
A plaque marks his birthplace in the historic centre, a discreet memorial to one of Vicenza's least-celebrated but most significant citizens. The contrast with the elaborate commemorations of Palladio is instructive: architecture leaves large buildings, exploration leaves only books and maps. The Atlas Obscura entry and a small museum installation in the Biblioteca Civica Bertoliana keep his memory alive locally, but most visitors to Vicenza walk past the house without knowing whose it was.
