Arasta Mosque Minaret

This solitary Ottoman minaret in the old bazaar is all that remains of the Arasta Mosque, which was demolished in the 19th century. The minaret itself survived, and now stands somewhat incongruously among the shops and cafes of Prizren's commercial centre, a thin finger of stone pointing skyward with nothing around it.

The minaret is notable for an unusual decorative symbol worked into the brickwork near its summit — a detail that has puzzled architectural historians and given it a small but loyal following among visitors interested in Ottoman curiosities. You will probably walk past it without noticing unless you look up; it is worth pausing for a moment among the market stalls to locate it.

A story
The minaret of the Arasta Mosque carries an unusual decorative symbol near its top: a stylised crescent and star enclosed within a circle, executed in brickwork. The symbol is not standard Ottoman iconography, and local tradition has produced several competing explanations for its origin — some link it to pre-Islamic Illyrian symbols, others to a specific craftsman's signature. The mosque it served was demolished long ago, leaving this lone tower standing in the bazaar quarter without a building to belong to.
