The Kalaja (from Turkish kale, fortress) crowns the hill above Prizren and commands views over the entire city and the Sharr mountain range to the south. The climb from the old town takes about 20 minutes on a steep cobbled path through an Ottoman-era residential quarter.
The fortress itself is a layered accumulation of Byzantine, medieval Serbian, and Ottoman construction. The curtain walls are largely intact and you can walk a good portion of the circuit. The views from the top are the finest in Kosovo — the jumble of Ottoman rooftops, the twin minarets, the Bistrica river, and the mountains behind form a composition that explains why Prizren has been called the most beautiful city in the western Balkans. Visit in the early evening when the light is low and the city begins to glow.
