League of Prizren Museum

The League of Prizren building stands near the old bazaar, a modest Ottoman-era structure where Albanian leaders assembled in June 1878 to resist the partition of Albanian lands at the Congress of Berlin. The meeting produced the founding document of Albanian nationalism, and the building is treated as a near-sacred site in Kosovo.

The building was burned and heavily damaged during the Kosovo War of 1999 and has since been restored. A small museum inside traces the history of the League and the Albanian national movement, with documents, photographs, and artefacts. The exhibits are largely in Albanian, but the historical photographs are worth the visit without translation. The building's courtyard and the surrounding quarter are pleasant to walk in the early evening.

A story
The League of Prizren was founded on 10 June 1878, just weeks after the Congress of Berlin began carving up the Ottoman Empire among the European powers. Albanian leaders feared that the great powers would distribute Albanian-inhabited lands to Serbia, Montenegro, Greece, and Bulgaria — which is largely what happened. The League was the first modern Albanian political organisation, and its founding document is considered the birth of Albanian nationalism. Its memory is central to Kosovo Albanian identity in a way that visitors from outside the region often find surprising given the modest building in which it met.
