The most rewarding day trip is south to Kuldīga, about 50 km inland, with its remarkable Venta Rapid waterfall — at 249 metres across, the widest waterfall in Europe — and a perfectly preserved 17th- and 18th-century brick old town that was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2023.
Closer to home, the Irbene Radio Telescope makes a good half-day trip with its mix of Cold War archaeology and active radio astronomy. The string of fishing villages and beach pine forests south along the Kurzeme coast toward Liepāja — Užava, Pāvilosta, Jūrkalne — are good for cyclists and birdwatchers.
