Hotel Pušynas

Hotel Pušynas ("Pine Grove Hotel") is a striking example of Soviet-era modernist architecture in Druskininkai, a structure that would look at home in a 1960s science fiction film. The building is the most prominent surviving piece of the Soviet sanatorium complex that once defined the town's health tourism infrastructure — an angular, glass-and-concrete structure that expressed the ambitions of Soviet modernism in their most optimistic form.

The hotel is still operating, which means you can stay in or visit one of the most intact examples of Baltic Soviet modernism. The interiors retain some period features, and the overall effect is of time having moved at a slightly different pace here than in the rest of Lithuania. Whether or not you stay, the building is worth seeing from the outside as a document of an era and an aesthetic that is slowly disappearing from the landscape of the former Soviet Baltic republics.
