Between Shades of Gray by Rūta Šepetys (2011) — a young adult novel following a Lithuanian girl deported to Siberia in 1941. Šepetys, a Lithuanian-American author, researched the deportations extensively and the book has introduced many readers to a chapter of Lithuanian history that remains little known in the West.
Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin by Timothy Snyder (2010) — a rigorous and important history of the zone between Berlin and Moscow where the mass killings of the 20th century were concentrated. Lithuania sits at the heart of this geography, and Snyder's account makes the scale of what happened in the region comprehensible.
The Bradt Guide to the Baltic States by Neil Taylor and others — the most thorough English-language practical guide to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Useful background on history, culture, and practical travel across all three countries, including the smaller cities that other guides skip.
Three Seconds by Sigitas Parulskis (2013; translated from Lithuanian) — a Lithuanian noir novel following a wartime collaborator haunted by his past. One of the few works of Lithuanian literary fiction to reach an international readership in translation; dark and compelling.
