Panevėžys is not a major detour destination, but it rewards a stop on the Vilnius–Riga route. The Juozas Miltinis Drama Theatre gives the city an outsized cultural reputation, and a surprising concentration of street murals makes the centre more interesting to walk than most Lithuanian provincial towns. A half-day is enough to cover the main sights comfortably.
