The Kosturnica Memorial is Strumica's most forceful modern monument, set on a rise above town and shaped by the memorial language of socialist Yugoslavia. Its concrete forms and open setting give it a solemnity that is quite different from the churches and everyday streets below.
The site is worth the climb for both history and perspective. Even if you are not tracing Second World War memorials in detail, the view back over Strumica helps explain the town's position in the valley.
