Latnija Cave

A small limestone shelter set in the cliffs above the coast at L-Aħrax, the Latnija cave is one of the most important recent archaeological sites in Malta. Excavations through the early 2020s revealed evidence of mesolithic hunter-gatherers, predating the temple-building cultures by roughly a thousand years and rewriting the textbook story of how the islands were first peopled.

The site itself is fenced and not generally open to the public — work is ongoing — but the cliff walk above it from the Red Tower is a fine outing in its own right and an interpretation board sets out the find. Check with the Mellieha tourist office for any visitor days announced for the dig season.

A story
In 2025 the Latnija site made international news when archaeologists announced finds of human occupation dating back 8,500 years — pushing the date of the first known humans on Malta back by a full thousand years and showing that hunter-gatherers reached the island before the more famous Neolithic temple-builders. The cave had been used for millennia, the dig found, by people hunting deer that no longer exist on the island.
