Selmun Palace

A miniature Baroque palace standing on the high ground above the Selmun headland, built in the 1780s as a hunting lodge and country retreat for the Monte della Redenzione, a fraternity dedicated to ransoming Christian slaves from the Barbary states. The design is unusual — a small but proper Italianate palazzo, with corner bartizans and a chapel, dropped in the middle of empty country.

The palace is closed to the public (it operates intermittently as a hotel) but the exterior and the surrounding heath, with views across to St Paul's Island, are easy to visit. The walk down to Mistra Bay below the palace is one of the prettiest in the area, with sea views the whole way.
