Nenu the Artisan Baker on St Dominic Street is built around the Maltese ftira — a flatbread baked in stone ovens and topped with a range of traditional Maltese ingredients. The bread is made fresh throughout the day and the toppings include tuna, bigilla (broad bean paste), sun-dried tomatoes, olives, and capers — the basic components of Maltese peasant cooking translated into a casual lunch. It is one of the most honest and reasonably priced meals available in Valletta.
The cafe also sells traditional Maltese sweets and baked goods and serves coffee. The space itself, a vaulted stone room, feels appropriately Valletta. A good option for a cheap, filling, genuinely Maltese lunch between sightseeing.
