Orhei

Moldovan market town on the Răut River, often used as the gateway to Orheiul Vechi.

Orhei is a small regional town about 45 km north of Chisinau. Most travelers pass through it on the way to Orheiul Vechi, the remarkable cave monastery complex that lies another 18 km beyond. Orhei itself has a modest centre with a tree-lined park along the Răut River, a market, the 1632 St Dumitru Church — one of the oldest buildings in Moldova — and the regional history and ethnography museum.

It is connected to Chisinau by regular marshrutka (about an hour). If you are making a day trip to Orheiul Vechi, Orhei is the practical interchange point, though getting the last stretch to the complex requires a local taxi or a vehicle.

Day Trips

The cave monastery at Orheiul Vechi is the one essential excursion from Orhei — and indeed the only realistic reason most visitors come to this part of Moldova. The complex sits 18 km south of the town on a high meander of the Răut River. A taxi from Orhei costs around 200–300 lei round trip with an hour's wait; otherwise infrequent local minibuses from the bus station reach Butuceni village at the foot of the monastery.

Getting There

By marshrutka is the standard way in. Minibuses from Chisinau's North Bus Station (Autogara Nord) run every 15–30 minutes during the day, take about 60 to 80 minutes depending on traffic and stops, and cost a few dozen lei. They drop at Orhei's own small bus station near the centre.

By car, the M2 from Chisinau is a reasonable two-lane road taking about an hour. Parking in central Orhei is easy and free.

There is no useful rail service to Orhei.
