Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ

The Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ is the largest Orthodox church in Montenegro and the most striking modern building in Podgorica. Construction began in 1993 and the cathedral was consecrated in 2013, twenty years later. The architecture follows Neo-Byzantine tradition, with a central dome and four flanking towers, but on a scale that dominates the city skyline. The stone used is Venetian white limestone, giving it a pale, somewhat otherworldly appearance.

The interior is covered in frescoes painted by Montenegrin artists in the 1990s and 2000s. The quality is high and the iconographic programme ambitious. The cathedral stands in a pleasant green space near the city centre and is open to visitors throughout the day. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered — as it is an active place of worship.

A story
The cathedral's interior frescoes include something almost no other Orthodox church in the world dares to depict: the faces of Marshal Tito, Karl Marx, and Friedrich Engels among the figures burning in hell. Painted in the 1990s as Montenegro sought to distance itself from its communist past, the images remain a talking point among visitors and clergy alike.
