Podgorica is a practical base for day trips into Montenegro's interior and coast. The old capital Cetinje is 40km south, easily reached by bus or taxi in 40 minutes, and has more historical monuments than Podgorica. Skadar Lake National Park starts just 30km south of the city — the largest lake in the Balkans, fringed by wetlands full of Dalmatian pelicans, cormorants, and herons. Rent a car or join a tour for the lake.
The Morača Canyon, a few kilometres north of the city on the main highway toward Kolašin, is dramatic and easily reached by car or taxi. The 13th-century Morača Monastery sits inside the canyon and is one of the finest examples of Raškan medieval architecture in Montenegro.
