Independence Square (Trg Nezavisnosti) is the central public square of Podgorica, flanked by government buildings and the Montenegrin National Theatre. It was known as Republic Square during the Yugoslav era. The square is the focal point of national events and hosts a café culture at its edges that makes it the most sociable public space in the city centre.
The Montenegrin National Theatre on the square's western side was built in 1953 and has a good programme of drama and opera. The square itself is well-maintained and pleasant to walk through, though it lacks the grandeur of similar spaces in larger Balkan capitals.
