Almelo sits at the western edge of the Twente region, and its neighbours offer more in the way of museums, nightlife, and urban energy. Enschede, 20 minutes by train, is the cultural capital of Twente — home to the Rijksmuseum Twenthe and the open-air Openluchtmuseum Ootmarsum nearby. Hengelo is a short hop in the other direction and has a lively centre. The German border town of Nordhorn, reachable by bike along the canal, makes an unusual half-day excursion.
