Getting Around

Almelo's compact centre is easily walkable. The main shopping street, the Grote Kerk square, and the Stadspark are all within comfortable walking distance of each other.

The surrounding countryside is best explored by bike. The Molenvenroute is a well-marked cycling route that takes in mills, creeks, and meadows in the Twente landscape. The towpath of the Almelo–Nordhorn Canal runs eastward all the way to the German border — a flat, scenic ride through open polder that can be done in a half-day each way. Bikes can be hired at the railway station.

Almelo has good rail connections to Hengelo and Enschede (both under 20 minutes), making them easy day trips or onward destinations.
