The former estate of the Counts of Almelo is closed to the public, but the grounds around it are worth a wander. Long tree-lined avenues — the Gravenallee — lead up to the mansion, passing old watchman's huts where toll was once collected from anyone passing through. The fields and woodland make for a pleasant escape from the town centre, even with the motorway that now cuts through the estate.
Huize Almelo and Gravenallee
A story
The Counts of Almelo ruled over the town and its surrounds for centuries. Their estate, with its long tree-lined Gravenallee and old toll huts where travellers once paid to pass, gives a vivid sense of how feudal authority shaped this corner of Overijssel right into the modern era.
