Bloemkamp Abbey, also called Oldeklooster, was a Cistercian monastery founded in 1191 at Hartwerd, a few kilometres northeast of Bolsward. It was one of the most important religious houses in medieval Friesland and was finally dissolved at the Reformation in the 1580s. The buildings were demolished, and only foundations and a few traces remain on a low rise in the polder landscape.
The site is reachable by bike from Bolsward in around 20 minutes through typical Frisian polder countryside. There is little to see physically, but informational panels and the open landscape give a sense of the medieval settlement pattern. Combine with a short tour of the small villages around Bolsward — Tjerkwerd, Hartwerd, Burgwerd — each with its own modest church.
