Bolsward is one of the eleven cities of Friesland, a historic market town not far from the Afsluitdijk, the great dyke connecting Friesland with North Holland. It is one of the stops on the Elfstedentocht ice-skating route when the canals freeze hard enough.
The compact inner city has over 80 listed monuments. The ornate Renaissance city hall is the standout, but the Martinikerk (with a fine organ), the ruined Broerekerk, and the Oudheidkamer (a small antiquities museum) are all worth a look. Bolsward is a quiet town, easily visited as a side trip from Leeuwarden or Sneek.
