Day Trips

Bolsward sits right in the cluster of small Frisian towns that make up the historic Eleven Cities, so the best day trips are short and easily linked by bike or the regional bus. Sneek, ten kilometres east, is the liveliest of the neighbours — a watersports hub built around a famous 15th-century water gate, and the busiest stop on the summer sailing calendar. South along the old Zuiderzee coast, Workum keeps a long ribbon of gabled merchant houses and a ceramics tradition, while tiny Hindeloopen is the prettiest of all, with its painted folk-art interiors, miniature harbour, and a maze of footbridges over the canals.

Closer to home, the ruins of Bloemkamp Abbey make an easy half-hour cycle northeast into the polder, past the small village churches of Tjerkwerd, Hartwerd, and Burgwerd. There is little left of the medieval Cistercian house but its footprint and a few information panels, but the flat, open landscape and the round of sleepy hamlets are reward enough for the ride.
