Café De Beyerd is one of Breda's classic brown cafes, occupying a historic building near the Grote Kerk. It serves an extensive selection of Belgian and Dutch beers in the informal, wood-panelled interior that the Dutch call a bruine kroeg — a brown pub, named for the tobacco-stained walls of an earlier era.
The beer menu runs to well over a hundred bottles, with a rotating selection on tap. The kitchen serves simple Dutch bar food to accompany the drinking. This is the kind of place that fills up on a grey afternoon when the weather turns and travellers discover they need somewhere warm and unhurried to wait it out.
