Het Noordbrabants Museum

Art museum with original Hieronymus Bosch paintings and Brabant art

Het Noordbrabants Museum is the main art museum for the North Brabant region, housed in a stately former government building in the centre of Den Bosch. Its permanent collection covers art from the medieval period to the present day, with a particular strength in work from the Brabant region.

The main draw for most visitors is the Hieronymus Bosch collection. Several authenticated works are on permanent display, along with drawings, archival material, and a detailed account of what scholarship has established — and still debates — about the painter's life and intentions. The museum also holds important Dutch Golden Age paintings and a good collection of 20th-century Brabant art. Allow at least two hours.

A story
For most of its history, Hieronymus Bosch's birthplace had almost none of his work. The paintings went to royal collections in Spain and Austria, leaving the city that shaped him with only reproductions. It was only in 2016, during the quincentenary of his death, that the museum managed to borrow a significant collection of originals for a landmark exhibition — and the permanent collection has since grown to include several authenticated works.
