The obvious day trip from Den Helder is Texel, the largest of the Wadden Islands, reached by a 20-minute ferry crossing. Texel has excellent beaches, a nature reserve, and a very different pace from the mainland. Den Helder also makes a convenient base for exploring the North Holland countryside — the old town of Alkmaar, famous for its Friday cheese market in season, is about 45 minutes by train or car.
