Den Helder is a compact city and most of the sights are within cycling distance. The main attractions — the Marinemuseum at Willemsoord, Fort Harssens, and the waterfront — are all within about two kilometres of the railway station. Fort Kijkduin and the Lange Jaap lighthouse are further, about four kilometres from the centre, but easily reached by bike or by bus.
Cycling is by far the best way to explore the area. Rental bikes are available from the station area. The coastal dike south to Fort Kijkduin and Huisduinen is a flat, pleasant ride with sea views. From Huisduinen you can continue south along the dune path for several kilometres before looping back through the polder.
Bus connections within the city are run by Connexxion. The ferry terminal for Texel is a five-minute walk from the main railway station.
