When to Go

Den Helder is a year-round destination but summer is the most pleasant time to visit. July and August bring the warmest weather — sea temperatures reach around 18 degrees Celsius and the beach at Huisduinen is busy. The Marinemuseum extends its opening hours and the ferry to Texel runs at peak frequency.

Spring and early autumn are the best times for cycling and walking the dunes and coastal fortifications. The light is good, the crowds are thin, and the Wadden Sea is at its most dramatic with migratory birds in spring and autumn storms beginning to build in October.

Winter is quiet and sometimes bleak, but the combination of a powerful North Sea and the empty coastal landscape has its own appeal. The museums are open year round and the ferry to Texel continues to run in all but the most severe weather.

The Navy Days (Vlootdagen) event, held every two years in late June, opens the active naval base to the public. Ships that are rarely accessible come alongside for tours and the waterfront is packed. Check ahead for the next date if you are planning your visit around it.
