Texel Ferry (TESO)

Frequent car and passenger ferry across the Marsdiep strait to Texel island

The TESO ferry is the only connection between the Dutch mainland and Texel, the largest of the Wadden Islands. The crossing takes about twenty minutes and runs roughly every hour throughout the day, with increased frequency in summer. The ferry carries cars, bicycles, and foot passengers and departs from the terminal at the northern end of Den Helder's waterfront, a short walk from the railway station.

The crossing itself is worth pausing for: the Marsdiep strait is one of the strongest tidal channels in the Netherlands, and the ferry must adjust its course to account for the current on every crossing. On a clear day you can see the lighthouse of Texel to the north and, behind you, the skyline of Den Helder and the naval masts. Bicycles can be taken on board for a small supplement — cycling around Texel from the ferry terminal is one of the most popular day trips in North Holland.
