Reddingsmuseum Dorus Rijkers

Waterfront lifeboat museum honouring coxswain Dorus Rijkers' 189 North Sea rescues

The Reddingsmuseum Dorus Rijkers is dedicated to the history of sea rescue on the Dutch coast. It is housed in a former lifeboat station right on the waterfront and named after the legendary coxswain Dorus Rijkers, who reportedly took part in 189 rescues between 1869 and 1904. The museum is small but well curated, with historic rescue boats and vivid accounts of North Sea storms.

The building itself is part of the story: the old boathouse was designed so that the lifeboat could be launched directly from the slipway into the harbour at a moment's notice. Exhibits cover the evolution of rescue equipment from the oar-powered surfboats of Rijkers' era to modern inflatable lifeboats, and there are personal accounts from rescuers and survivors. The museum is a short walk from the Marinemuseum and is worth combining into a single waterfront visit.
