One of the great small museums of Europe. Helene Kröller-Müller spent three decades between 1907 and 1939 assembling what is now the second-largest collection of Van Gogh in the world — almost 90 paintings and over 180 drawings — alongside an outstanding modernist collection: Mondrian, Seurat, Picasso, Léger, Braque. The building, a long low sprawl set directly in the pines, was designed by Henry van de Velde and extended later by Wim Quist. Outside, the 25-hectare sculpture garden is extraordinary in its own right, with pieces by Rodin, Henry Moore, Dubuffet, Claes Oldenburg and Richard Serra set among birch and heather. Allow most of a day. Admission to the museum includes entry to the national park that surrounds it.
