By train. Direct trains from Leeuwarden run every half-hour, with the line continuing into Harlingen Haven station next to the ferry terminal — useful if you are heading on to Vlieland or Terschelling. From Amsterdam, change at Leeuwarden; total journey around 2 hours 45 minutes.
By car. The A31 from Leeuwarden brings you to the southern edge of the town; parking is at the Westerzeedijk lots near the harbour. Driving into the old centre is slow and not recommended.
Ferries to the Wadden Islands of Vlieland and Terschelling leave from the Willemshaven, a short walk from both railway stations. Doeksen runs the regular service; the fast catamaran (35 minutes) and the slower car ferry (1h45) are run side by side.
