Hannemahuis Museum

Harlingen's local museum, housed in an 18th-century merchant's house just back from the Voorstraat. The collection covers the town's maritime history (a serious whaling and Greenland-fishing centre in the 17th and 18th centuries), the famous Harlinger tiles produced here from 1600 onwards, silverware, ship models, and contemporary art rotated through the upstairs galleries.

The Harlinger tile collection alone is worth the visit — Harlingen was one of the major producers of the blue-and-white Delft-style tiles that decorated Dutch fireplaces across northern Europe, and the local museum has the largest assembled set anywhere. Two hours is enough.
