Hengelo's best day trips lead straight out into the surrounding countryside. The gently rolling Twente cycling network starts at the city's doorstep, with numbered junction points guiding you through Saxon farmsteads, heath, and woodland — head southeast for the Hoge Boekel estate, or northwest to the village of Delden and its castle.
By train you can be in Enschede, the cultural capital of Twente, in ten minutes, or reach Deventer and its Hanseatic old town in under an hour. The German border is close enough that crossing over for an afternoon takes little effort.
