De Grolsch Veste (FC Twente)

De Grolsch Veste is the home of FC Twente, one of the better-supported football clubs outside the big Dutch cities. The 30,000-capacity stadium is just over the border in Enschede but easily reached from Hengelo by train or bike.

If you're in the region between August and May and football interests you, catching a home match is a good way to spend an evening. The atmosphere is genuine provincial Dutch football — passionate but not hostile. Check the FC Twente website for fixtures. Colosseum 1, Enschede.

A story
FC Twente won the Dutch Eredivisie title in 2010, their only championship, in a season that still resonates in the region. The stadium is named after the local Grolsch brewery — a corporate naming deal that nonetheless feels appropriate given that Grolsch has been brewed in the Twente region since 1615.
